Meeting membership increases

RETURN TO TABLE OF CONTENTS

PYM Monthly Meetings reported a net gain in membership during 1999 for the first time in the 20 years for which statistics are readily available.

There was a net gain of 33 members during the year. As of December 31, 1999, Philadelphia Yearly Meeting has 11,792 members. That includes 9,503 adults, 2,094 minors, and 195 associate members (youth whose membership ends at age 21 unless they apply for full membership). These figures are revised from what was reported at Yearly Meeting sessions in March.

Twenty years ago, PYM's membership stood at 13,758. Statistics are not collected on attenders because that category cannot be precisely defined.

During 1999, PYM Meetings accepted 298 applications for membership, while 59 resigned and 59 were released. Resignations and releases were at 20-year lows. Death came for 153 of our members, while 12 newborns were recorded as members. Transfers and adjustments accounted for the rest of the changes.

Abington Meeting (PA) and Woodstown Meeting (NJ) tied for the honor of having the most new members by application. Each accepted 17 new applicants last year. Yardley (PA) was a close second with 15 applications accepted. Richland (PA) released 14 members.

Germantown Meeting in Philadelphia is PYM's largest Meeting with 440 members.
