he Yearly Meeting continues its commitment to recognize and support Quaker teachers working in public schools, thanks to the ongoing efforts of the Public Education Working Group and the support of the Standing Committee on Education.
Douglas Heath, former Professor of Psychology at Haverford College, argued that only students who think creatively and critically can mature mentally and adapt to an ever-changing interconnected world. The PEWG wishes to support the projects of Friends working to achieve this goal through public education. Quakers who work in public education may apply for a project grant not to exceed $1,500 for the school year 2000-2001.
Application forms may be requested from the Education Programs Office (phone 215-241-7223 or e-mail to janetn@pym.org). The deadline for applying for these funds is March 31, 2000.
For information or questions about this grant program, call Marlene Santoyo of Germantown Meeting (PA) at 215-247-4385 or e-mail msantoyo@erols.com. Marlene is co-clerk of the Public Education Working Group and teaches in the Philadelphia public schools.
The PEWG continues to seek ways to support children, teachers and parents in public education. If you or another Friend would like to join in this work come to our upcoming meetings at the Friends Center, 1515 Cherry Street, Philadelphia, on Monday, March 20, and Monday, April 17, beginning at 5 p.m.
