coalition including PYM's Abolition 2000 Working Group is sponsoring a reception, dinner and forum to educate Philadelphia leaders, opinion makers, and news media about nuclear disarmament as it affects our security today. The event, called Global Security 2000, will take place on Thursday, March 30, at the Union League Club in Philadelphia. A panel of distinguished public figures will address attendees and lead them in an evening of dialogue.
The speakers will present an eminently current report on the imminent global dangers of nuclear weapon development and proliferation and make suggestions for change. The presentation will include the moral, ethical, spiritual, and legal dimensions of nuclear weapons. Comprising the panel are Ambassador Kamalesh Sharma (Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations), Ambassador Thomas Graham (former Director of the United States Arms Control and Disarmament Agency), and Jonathan Granoff (Chair of Lawyers Alliance for World Security). Admiral Stansfield Turner (former director of the Central Intelligence Agency, CIA) had agreed to join us but may be unable to attend because of a recent plane accident.
This event is the culmination of a two-year pursuit by the Abolition 2000 Working Group in coalition with concerned representatives from other Philadelphia organizations. The coalition, The Philadelphia Project for Global Security, seeks to deepen the knowledge of leaders from many venues on the crucial issue of nuclear disarmament and to engage them in dialogue. Our hope is that the insights gained from this event will persuade participants to undertake some concrete actions in the future. Invitees come from faith groups, business, finance, education, health care, government at many levels, law, labor, media, the arts, and historical and civic organizations.
Coalition members with whom Friends are joined locally to inspire citizen concern and action to avert nuclear weapons disaster include Lawyers Alliance for World Security, Physicians for Social Responsibility, Peace Action, Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, the United Nations Association - Greater Philadelphia Chapter, Veterans for Peace, Catholic Peace Fellowship, Brandywine Peace Community, and the Greens.
Global Security 2000 will take place on Thursday, March 30, at the Union League Club, 140 South Broad Street, Philadelphia. The reception begins at 5:30 PM; dinner and forum at 6:30 p.m. Cost per person is $100.
