udy Van Hoy of Green Street Meeting (PA) has been selected as the new director of Friends Workcamps. She began the position at the beginning of the year, transitioning from her previous job as associate librarian for PYM.
She is already familiar with the work, because from 1984 to 1989 Judy Cunningham (then) was the workcamp organizer.
Her future husband, Michael Van Hoy, took up where she left off as workcamp director. Michael left the Yearly Meeting staff in June 1999.
Meanwhile, Judy spent five years teaching third and fourth graders. She returned to PYM staff in 1995 to work in the library.
Judy's "Peace is a group effort" illustration using human figures to spell "Peace" appears on posters and bumper stickers around the world.
The Friends Workcamp offers service-learning opportunities in Philadelphia neighborhoods and can help Monthly Meetings organize work projects in their communities. Judy works with Hakim Hudson, who started last year as community resource director of Friends Workcamp. Kathryn Maleney of Plymouth Meeting (PA), who worked part-time with Workcamps, completed that service at the end of the year.
Judy can be reached at the Workcamp phone number, 215-241-7236, or by e-mail at judyv@pym.org.
