ore than fifty years ago, David Richie of Moorestown Meeting (NJ) began the Workcamp Program that has materially and spiritually enriched countless Friends and non-Friends. Volunteers make repairs to the homes of needy Philadelphia residents and everyone has an intercultural experience. The Workcamp Program provides the tools and the labor. Materials are provided by the residents who invite us into their homes to make repairs and to permit us to grow in understanding and spirit.
In 1985, Judy Cunningham (Van Hoy) began the "Pennies for Copper" project to help families who ran out of money for materials. The "Pennies for Copper" project has empowered little Friends in First-day School classes across PYM. They collected the pennies that enabled the program to succeed in helping those who lacked funds for materials.
Judy Van Hoy and Hakim Hudson are directing the work of this much-loved program. Judy and Hakim want Friends to know that they are again in need of "Pennies for Copper." Friends who appreciate this program are asked to send checks, and little Friends are again asked to collect pennies. The address is Friends Workcamp, Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, 1515 Cherry Street, Philadelphia PA 19102.
Judy and Hakim would be pleased to visit your Meeting to talk about the Workcamp Program. They may be reached by calling 215-241-7236. Their new e-mail address is workcamps@pym.org.
