Summer exhibit featuring Quakers in government

RETURN TO TABLE OF CONTENTS

The Arch Street Meeting House in Philadelphia hosts exhibits relevant to Quakerism and of interest to the thousands of tourists who visit each year. Because of the Republican National Convention in Philadelphia next summer, "Quakers and Government" has been selected as the theme for the next exhibit beginning July 1.

Volunteers are needed to assist Arch Street receptionist/guide Sandra Sudofsky of Gwynedd Meeting (PA) in preparing the exhibit. The Standing Committee on Support and Outreach has granted funds so that this exhibit can be outstanding.

It is felt that we have a message for the world to hear because Friends have participated in government. "Friends in England and America developed 'lobbying' from the occasional traditional petition to the sustained campaign on behalf of causes ranging from abolition to nuclear disarmament," said Mary Ellen Chijioke of the Friends Historical Library at Swarthmore College.

A small group of Friends has been working on this exhibit project and has contacted several leading Quaker historians for help and for suggestions on what to emphasize. So far they have been pleased with the responses. To make this a successful exhibit, we need to have other Friends who are willing to help. Work ranges from doing small pieces of research to mounting an attractive display panel. It is important for interested persons to get together to mutually plan this important activity. Come to the Fourth and Arch Street Meeting House for a meeting from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, January 22. Bring a brown bag lunch. The snow date will be Saturday, January 29, same place and time.

For further information, contact Sally Rickerman, interim clerk of the PYM Outreach Services Group, sshhrr@earthlink.net.

To volunteer, call Sandra Sudofsky at 215-627-2667.

Send exhibition material on Quaker politicians

One panel of the exhibit will be a display of 20 or more Philadelphia-area Quakers who have influenced government — local, state, national or international — in some way. We need your help! Can you send us a picture and a few sentences of description about a qualifying individual?

So far we have Norman Wood, Harold Evans, Albert Maris, Diane Allen, Albert Linton, Edmund B. Spaeth Jr., Rush Holt and Walter Farley. Also, Bob Haines and Ed Forsythe are being researched. With your help the list will grow and we will have a great exhibit.

The write-up is to be brief. An original photograph or a laser copy would be best for reproduction. Photographs can be returned. Please send materials by February 10 to Sandra Sudofsky, Arch Street Meeting House, 320 Arch Street, Philadelphia PA 19106.
