he Quaker Youth Pilgrimage is a biennial, international event for youth from different branches of Quakerism, ages 16-18. In the summer of 2000, July 14 to August 12, young Friends from America and Europe will gather to tour Quaker historical sites and more in England and Northern Ireland. They will participate in a work project and share each others' cultural and spiritual backgrounds. The event enables young Friends to explore their Quaker roots and exchange views on different Quaker traditions and practices while traveling, living, and working together.
Former pilgrims have said that the Pilgrimage was a pivotal spiritual experience in their late teen-age years. The Pilgrimage gives young Friends a chance to:
- experience different Quaker traditions and forms of worship;
- build lasting friendships;
- participate in a work project;
- visit with different Quaker communities and families; and
- increase cross-cultural understanding.
The Pilgrimage will have 28 young Friends and four adult facilitators. The cost for pilgrims is approximately $1,750 which includes transportation from Philadelphia to Northern Ireland and all expenses while on the Pilgrimage. Quaker Youth Pilgrimage is co-sponsored by the Section of the Americas and the Europe & Middle East Section of Friends World Committee for Consultation.
Adult facilitators and pilgrims are needed! For more information and application forms, write FWCC, Section of the Americas, 1506 Race Street, Philadelphia PA 19102. Phone (215) 241-7250; fax (215) 241-7285; e-mail Judyb@FWCC.quaker.org.
