he first Quaker College Fair was a great success! Approximately 150 people from all parts of PYM's extended community attended the event at Friends Select School in October. High school students came from as far as Washington, DC, State College, PA, and New York City. We had vans from Westtown and George School, as well as lots of kids from each of the other PYM Friends high schools. Furthermore, we estimate that fully half of the participants came from public schools in the region!
All of the admissions representatives of Quaker Colleges indicated that they found the event to be well worth their while, and that they look forward to the next one. We gathered a great deal of helpful evaluation feedback, which will allow us to strengthen future Quaker College Fairs.
A special thanks goes to Chris Mahon of Woodstown Meeting (NJ), who clerked this project for PYM. Thanks, too, to three Haverford College students who volunteered tirelessly and helped make the event run smoothly.
The idea for a Quaker College Fair to connect high-school-age Friends in the PYM area with the opportunities offered by Quaker colleges across the United States came to PYM staff person Judy Van Hoy while on a visit to Guilford College in North Carolina. The fair was co-sponsored by PYM, Friends Association for Higher Education, and Friends Council on Education.
