ave you made plans yet for next summer? If not, perhaps you will want to participate in the biennial PYM Educational Pilgrimage to England, to visit the land where Quakerism began. As in past years, 20-30 Pilgrims will travel to the "1652 Country" of Cumbria and Lancashire, in the northwest of England. Among notable sites from Quaker history, Friends will see Pendle Hill; Swarthmoor Hall; the Quaker Tapestry at Kendal; the Blue Idol (William Penn's meetinghouse); and Jordans (Penn's grave).
The dates for the Pilgrimage are July 7 to July 22, 2000, with Friends having the option to extend their trip beyond that time. In the past, Friends from PYM have been joined by Quakers from other parts of the United States. Our British hosts will be Friends from Chichester Meeting, which will be celebrating its 300th Anniversary in 2000, as well as members of the Northwest 1652 Committee of Britain Yearly Meeting. More information will be available in a packet sent to those who express an interest in participating.
Friends who have participated in the Pilgrimage in the past have done so with a variety of expectations. Most have been looking for spiritual roots, and a context for them. Many have wanted to understand the early Quakers and to discover the source of their strength. The trip, a project under the oversight of the Education Standing Committee of PYM, usually involves numerous Quakers who are active in education and therefore bring a concern for relating Quaker history to their work in teaching. For information about the 2000 Pilgrimage, call Tom Hoopes, PYM Coordinator of Education, at 215-241-7224 or e-mail tomh@pym.org.
