mother of a Friends Select School graduate phoned me in the summer near her wit's end about paying for college. Her son had entered college and found student loans impossible to obtain without proof of draft registration. I was happy to be able to tell her about a fund specifically set up to aid college students who have not registered with the Selective Service System.
Since draft registration returned, most college tuition aid requires males to demonstrate compliance. When a student is a conscientious objector to the military and has not registered, the Fund for Education and Training (FEAT) is available. For information call Bob Daugherty of the National Interreligious Service Board for Conscientious Objectors (NISBCO) in Washington at 202-483-2220.
When I recently saw the young Friend from Falls Meeting (PA) who had been helped by the fund this summer, he was positively glowing with pleasure about his studies, and anticipating use of a FEAT grant again next year.
The late Jim Bristol of Germantown Meeting (PA) was active in the formation of FEAT because he foresaw the pressure to register that would result from linking college funding to compliance. PYM formerly had funding for this purpose; that money has since been turned over to FEAT. Overseers of Monthly Meetings should be aware of this fund.
