n a Saturday in June, 36 members, attenders and friends of Sadsbury Meeting in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, ventured forth from our quiet country surroundings to travel into bustling downtown Philadelphia. Our purpose was a visit to Quaker sites, including Arch Street Meeting House, Friends Center and Penn Treaty Park.
Our tour was led by Michael Van Hoy of Green Street Meeting (PA). His unique blend of humor and history gave us new insights into how the early Quakers shaped Philadelphia history. For many of us, it was our first visit to Friends Center. Spending time in the PYM Library there was a highlight. We also enjoyed "doing lunch" at the Reading Terminal Market.
Thanks to a grant from PYM's Membership Development Support Fund, our Meeting was able to charter a bus for this intergenerational outing. This meant that we traveled in companionable comfort, without the hassle of trying to find parking in the city.
This trip and other new programs and activities have strengthened and increased membership and attendance at Sadsbury Meeting. We have an active First-day School (pre-kindergarten through high school) and enjoy thought-provoking adult forums. We sponsor several community nights at the Meeting throughout the year as a form of outreach; we sing, tell stories and share homemade desserts.
We welcome all to join us in meeting for worship at 10:15 a.m. each Sunday. The meetinghouse is on Simmontown Road, one-half mile east of Route 41 in Gap, Pennsylvania.
