This has been a year of reflection and witness, and Friends have been involved in many crossroads — in Meetings, communities and organizations — discerning directions for peace and trying to assist peace. Below are some events and notices that may be helpful to Friends either doing this work or reflecting on a world needing peace. It's hoped these offer opportunities for further seasoning and renewal.

September 8

Salem Quarterly Meeting. Salem Quarter’s Worship & Ministry Committee presents the program, which will look at our Meetings’ response to 9/11/2001. The Quarter will gather at Greenwich MM’s Orthodox meetinghouse at 2:30 pm for business starting at 3:00. September 10

PYM Women’s Gathering Group meets for potluck and worship sharing, invites other women to join this evening event, preceeding September 11 worship open to all. - Arch Street Meeting House. [See next item.]

September 11

Extended worship open to all, sponsored by PYM’s Women’s Gathering Group. Lunch, childcare will be available; woship sharing groups in afternoon also an option. Join this from 8 -5 or portions of the day. Potluck dinner at 5 prior to 5:30 interfaith service at Arch St. [See * Interfaith Gathering, 9/11]

September 11

Richland Friends Meeting in Quakertown PA will be open from 7AM to 8PM to honor the memory of the tragic events of one year ago, with a Meeting for Worship at 6:30PM. All are welcome to stop in any time. There will be fellowship and coffee in the schoolhouse next door to the Meeting House. Childcare will be available. The Meeting House is located at Park Avenue and Main Street in Quakertown. For additional information, call Linda Cooper at 215-538-1503.

Interfaith Gathering for Peace and Justice

  • 5:30-7:30pm — Interfaith Gathering at 4th and Arch
  • 7:30-9:00pm — Candlelight Procession to Love Park (15th and JFK) An alliance of religious and secular organizations calls upon all communities of faith around Phila. to join together on the anniversary of the Sept. 11th attacks, for an evening of interfaith action in the name of peace and justice. Medford Meeting Peace and Social Concerns Committee is having a peace vigil on September 11th from 5:30-6:30 outside the Meeting House. Then there will be worship inside. They invite anyone who would like to come.

Hockessin Friends Meeting will be open from 7 pm to 9 pm for prayerful remembrance of the lives lost to terrorist violence.

Iraq and the US: Can we have peace? A panel of speakers, moderated by Jonathan Snipes (Falls Meeting). Discussion and refreshments will follow. 4 PM at the Meeting House at George School. 215-945-7061.

Abington Meeting: Laurence Sigmond of Germantown Meeting will lead a discussion about Friends' response to the militarism and terrorism of this past year. We will consider response within our meetings as well as public witness. Laurence works as PYM's Peace and and Concerns Coordinator supporting Friends and Meetings in peace and concerns initiatives. 9:45pm

Meeting for Worship to pray for peace, Princeton Meeting, 3-4 PM, followed by social hour

Peace in the streets, peace on earth: A day for interfaith witness in Chester, Pennsylvania. Sponsors include faith and community organizations. Making connections between national military spending and community needs.

October 18 - 20

New Jersey Friends Tri-Quarterly Gathering. This year’s theme for the gathering of the three New Jersey quarters, held annually at Camp Ockanickon, Medford Lakes, N.J., is “Reason for Hope.” For a flier with full details of workshops, schedule, and registration fees, call Cindy Cox Crispin, Registrar, at (856)478-4093.

First Friday Lecture Series

September to December, 12 noon unless stated. Lunch is not served.

For more than 85 years the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) has worked in troubled regions of the world for peace, justice and reconciliation. Founded in 1917 to provide conscientious objectors with an opportunity to aid civilian victims during World War I, AFSC has programs in the United States, Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America that focus on issues related to economic justice, peace-building and demilitarization, social justice, and youth. This series is part of a speakers bureau designed to help increase knowledge and understanding of a wide variety of world issues today.   • September 6 – ECONOMIC JUSTICE – Living in Hope: People Challenging Globalization — Take a global look at issues affecting workers and worker's rightsduring the week of Labor Day. John Feffer and Ricardo Hernandez, featured in this book signing and discussion.

  • October 4 – SOCIAL JUSTICE – Discovering a New World: Demystifying Immigrant Populations — The great American "melting-pot" is comprised of native peoples and those whose ancestors came - willingly and unwillingly - from distant shores. But have the Sept. 11 tragedies changed public perceptions of immigrants? Take a closer look at common myths and misconceptions, and join the Philadelphia premiere of AFSC's newest film Enchando Raices: Taking Root – Immigrant and Refugee Communities...

  • November 1 through 8 – SOCIAL, ECONOMIC AND RACIAL JUSTICE : AFSC: Working for Peace, Justice and Human Dignity for 85 years — First Friday celebrates AFSC's 85 years of service to humanity with the documentary film Rufus Jones, A Luminous Life. At 7 p.m., enjoy an exquisite night of music. Philadelphia Orchestra violinist Judith Geist will perform the newly composed work When Peace Comes, inspired by September 11. The smooth, folksy sounds of Doylestown Meeting's "Faith & Practice" will be an added treat. After the Annual Public Gathering on Saturday, explore key issues for civil rights and racial justice with Leadings of the Spirit: Striving for Racial Justice a 6-day symposium at Pendle Hill Center for Study and Contemplation.   • December 6 – HUMANITARIAN RELIEF – The Spirit of Giving — Since 1917, the AFSC Emergency and Material Assistance Program (EMAP - formerly Material Aids) has provided crucial assistance to people struggling for survival in the wake of disasters. Join EMAP director Carlos Mejia for a broader look at the spirit of giving during this holiday season.

FWCC conference on peace will be gathering. Watch for ways to support this opportunity for invited Friends of all traditions coming together to discern way forward.
