Fairhill Friends Ministry
Current NeedsWe need prayers for our work in the neighborhood.
Prayers for the suscitation of community shepherds and for the strengthening of those who are serving. I feel so thankful for the presence of a core of committed neighbors who gather regularly to consider the needs of the community. Still, we need more voices and hands.
We are in great need, particularly, of volunteers who might want to engage various activities with neighborhood children one afternoon a week. Children from two apartment buildings gather evey afternoon in their community room to do homework. On Fifth Days (Thursdays,) from 4 to 5, I join them to do some art or to play games, trying to help children find in their art and play nourishment for their souls. Would a few Friends be willing to offer, in addition to their prayers, some of their time?
Finally, we need prayers as we face three important challenges, as part of our neighborhood organization, The Neighbors of Fairhill:
- First, the installation of new playground equipment in Fairhill Square. We expect an initial phase to be completed this coming spring. Then we will start the process to design and install a second phase in a different area of the park
- Second, securing a building to serve our neighborhood park, Fairhill Square, with restrooms, storage space, and room for community activities. There are two empty rowhouses across the street from the park, belonging to Philadelphia Housing Authority (PHA). PHA is willing to give one of them to the community. We are trying to convince the city's Recreation Department to enter into a partnership with PHA and us, and to assume ownership and rehabilitation of such a building.
- Third, completing the redesign of our park. Having removed the bunker that once made our park ugly and unsafe, we still need to reintroduce to the park the open space theatre (El Gran Teatro de la Luna) along with the sculpture that celebrates the theme, which is now in storage, waiting for its redisplay.
