Burlington Friends Worship Group

"A Vibrant Modern Meeting in an Historic Urban Setting"

Friends from across the central New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania region gather each week on Sunday Morning at 10 am for Quaker worship in Burlington, New Jersey. The locale is the beautifully restored - with a thoroughly modern addition for meals and hospitality - Burlington Meetinghouse at 340 High Street in the center of Burlington.

Local friends often walk to Meeting. There is also on-site parking for those who wish to drive, but many Friends who live outside the city of Burlington use the RiverLine light rail system to come to Meeting, since the Burlington Town Center stop on the RiverLine is only a half-block from the Meetinghouse.

Burlington Meeting provides a great opportunity for Friends from a broad region to gather together in a central location for an hour of worship in silent waiting upon the Divine - which will perhaps be somewhat familiar to those from other faith traditions as a service in silent prayer. Visitors are also warmly welcomed to join us for worship in our beautiful and comfortable, old Meetinghouse. Friends seek that of God in each person, and worship in a direct way without creed or the intervention of either ritual or clergy. We are often led in our worship by enduring principles of Quaker witness - often summed up as "SPICES" - Simplicity, Peace, Integrity, Community, Equality, and Stewardship.

At 10 am each Sunday Morning we settle into worship. Quaker worship is held in silence. Each person present silently prays, mediatates, or otherwise waits upon the Divine as each feels is appropriate. Some may feel led to stand and speak to share a thought, recollection, observation, or insight with others who are present. Friends hold that such messages arise from Divine leading..

At 11 o clock, the Friend who has been appointed Head of Meeting for this month will turn and shake hands with the next person, and everyone in the Meetinghouse turns and shakes hands with the person sitting on each side, and Meeting is over. Announcements will be made and everyone is then welcome to stay for refreshments and fellowship.

Burlington Meetinghouse is made up of both the historic worship space, shown behind the brick wall above, and a sparkling addition to the rear which provides modern hosting space for the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Conference Center function which this great complex serves among modern Quakers.

Such gatherings help visitors to get to know Friends, and also build community among Quakers - fellowship helps us know each other, and to share our experiences in the world.

We look forward to sharing Quaker worship and fellowship with other Friends and with visitors at Meeting for Worship on Sunday Mornings at Burlington Meetinghouse. Come join us. Whether you are just interested in learning more about modern Quakers, or if you are seeking a new spiritual home, you will be warmly welcomed.
