June 28, 2002
Dear Friend,
I am writing to inform you of some important decisions that
were made at our June Interim Meeting. The most important decision for you to
know about is the fact that we decided to have a special meeting in July
to discuss Thom Jeavons annual report. Due to other pressing business
on our agenda last night, we were unable to give the discussion of Thoms
report the time and energy that it deserves. Our July meeting will take place
at the regular time and place: 6:00 PM on the 4th Thursday (July 25),
at Arch Street. You will be receiving an advance agenda in the mail with
details.
The other decision that I wanted to communicate to you is one concerning the
Yearly Meeting making a $4000 donation to FWCC to help to fund the Peace Conference
they are having for all Friends in the United States and Canada. It will be
called Peace Witness in a Time of Crisis: A Friends Consultation, and it will
take place on January 17-20, 2003 in Greensboro, North Carolina. The Peace and
Concerns Standing Committee was asked by the Yearly Meeting in session in March
to advise Interim Meeting about how we can best support this effort. Last evening
the Standing Committee recommended that PYM give $4000. toward the cost of the
conference and also give FWCC some staff time to help in the organization of
this event. The Standing Committee does not have funds available for the $4000,
nor does Interim Meeting have any contingency money that we could use for this.
The Yearly Meeting will probably be finishing this fiscal year with a small
deficit. In light of our desire to help with this important conference, one
Friend suggested that each Interim Meeting member go back to his or her meeting
and request $100 toward the $4000. Friends readily united with that suggestion.
The Yearly Meeting will send FWCC the $4000 and we will hope to collect close
to that amount from the Meetings. If your meeting chooses to participate in
this effort, please send your check to PYM, but note on the check that the money
is for FWCC.
The other recommendation from the Standing Committee is that we contribute to
a fund that FWCC is starting to help Young Friends from all over to travel to
the conference. They are reserving about 50 spaces at the conference for Young
Friends. PYM will be sending 6 young people. Friends decided last night to also
ask our Meetings to contribute to this fund and to send the money directly to
FWCC, Section of the Americas, 1506 Race St., Philadelphia PA 19102-1498.
If you have any questions about this, please feel free to call me (856 358 3528)
or email me (cjmahon@bellatlantic.net) or call the PYM office 800- 220-0PYM
extension 7235 and talk to Phil Mullen. May you have a wonderful summer.
Sincerely,
Chris Mahon, clerk
