Friends Institute
Granting Group is seeking inspired ideas, coordinators and young adult
participants to bring new events and activities to PYM young adults! With
the Working Group in hibernation, see the open
invitation for making things happen locally in your monthly meeting
or with a wider reach across PYM.
| There
is another a informal young adult Quakers group that started in
early 2005 that maintains a listserv.
Philadelphia
Young Adult Friends (PYAF) is a group of young adult Quakers
(roughly 18-32) and Quaker sympathizers meet together and talk about
their experiences and needs as young adults.
PYAF
seeks to share life experiences and attitudes, and come together
as an energetic, supportive community of seekers. They have a foundation
in Quaker principles, ethics, and practices.
The
group meets every other Thursday and Sunday evenings for a potluck
meal, fellowship and Meeting for Worship. Different people take
turns hosting the gathering. PYAF gatherings are generally in the
Philadelphia, with occasional events in the suburbs.

Past Events
For a while, we came together for "Second Sunday Sojourn" when we met for worship at a different designated Monthly Meeting each month somewhere within the Yearly Meeting. We introduced ourselves to the meeting and one another during the social time after worship and often went to lunch together afterwards.
NOTE - This event is no longer going on - but it was a great way for those who participated to meet new young adults as well as others around the Yearly Meeting. Thought I'd leave the schedule here as a reminder to those who made the trips! See the main PYM Local Meetings Directory for worship times or setting up your own sojourn.

Past Events
- March 2003, 2004, 2005 - the Annual Chinese dinner during PYM sessions. One of FI regular's outreach events, where we pick up the tab to take out a group of up to forty young adults from across the Yearly Meeting. Check out the pictures from one of the recent years.
- October Camp Ockanickon Tri-Quarter Retreat, From 2002-2005 young adult Friends have gathered in October for an enjoyable weekend "event within an event" at the annual retreat of the three S. Jersey Quarterly Meetings. It meets at a S Jersey YMCA camp with plenty of outdoor space, usually in mid-October. Tri-Quarter features workshops, worship, hay-rides, an evening of folk-dancing and another evening of cooperative games. There is an outdoor challenge course and opportunities for young adults to mingle without having to plan the whole thing. For info about the next one email
Georgeacrispin at AOL.com.
- July Taylor
Farm gathering, potluck and frisbee day. Since 2002 FI has shared a lunch then played together and concluded with a business meeting on what has always been a fine summer day on the banks of the Delaware. Timed for the same day but preceding by a few hours the annual potluck dinner of the "Conscience, Militarism, and War Tax Concerns Group". Check their site for the exact next date. For a few years we arrived early and did service work at the adjoining nature preserve or organic family farm still maintained by the Quaker Taylor family. Here we learned new games such as up-jenkins.

- February 2005
New Profiteer Sustainable Business Plan Competition for Young Adult Quakers- This took FI to a whole new level. We were one of the first organizations to support a first-of-its-kind regional business plan competition for "triple bottom line" businesses that respected "people, planet and profits." We ended up attracting dozens of business plans from young adult Quaker entrepreneurs who were judged within a distinct "track" on account of their Quaker affiliation. There's an official write-up that needs to get added here since the newprofiteer.org site went offline, but other accounts on the web provide a sense of what FI members were instrumental in helping to bring about. A very big deal. And a great success!
- Young Adult-Related Project Funding - Phase 2, Presentation, Networking and Selection, Saturday June 21st 2004, at Arch Street Meetinghouse. The PYM working group applicants teams, Young Adult Friends, and other PYM Granting Groups shared their proposals via a table-top fair and attended a workshop about socially responsible business given by a local entreprenuer while the FI selection committee selected seven out of twelve proposed projects for funding. It was a huge labor of love on everyone's part to bring plans and funding together - and a great day! See our "marketplace" page for more details.
- December holiday cookie-baking and potluck... mmmm good.
- Young Friends Alumni Reunion, June 13-14th 2003 at the Burlington Meetinghouse for Young Adult Friends who have “graduated” from PYM's Young Friends group (having turned 18.) If you feel inspired to plan a similar event, check out the detail on this registration form - it was an undertaking to compose! ---> (PDF, RTF, HTML)
- Labor Day 2002, Grantee Reunion at Pendle
Hill. After a presentation by Ed Dreby from the PYM
Environment Working Group, 5
recent grant recipients presented to the broader FI group how they used Friends Institute funds and
how their projects made an impact. This event occured once after scheduling a time with several of the grantees proved to be more than we could pull off twice!
- Pocono Mountain getaway weekend August 2001, at the "Air Castle" retreat house.
- Winter Ski Weekends in the Poconos - organized sporadically in small groups via our yahoogroups email list
- Beach
Weekend in Avalon NY September, 2002
