Young Friends gatherings create a fun and vibrant community of high-school-aged Quaker and Quaker-friendly folks!
Come play! At the Young Friends’ Camp Onas Gathering, we’ll welcome old and new Young Friends for some of the regular Camp Onas treats (Rope swing! The Sheep’s Hole! Oh my!) with a twist on de-stressing and self-care. Look forward to workshops discovering your personality type, exploring ourselves through others’ eyes, techniques for managing when the going gets rough, and finally, a spa and body-care day topped off by a pool party! This week will be a fun and important time for Young Friends to come together and create a sense of community for the upcoming year – playing hard, learning and discerning together, sharing deeply, and getting a final bit of relaxation in before the school year hits. Come join in!
What to Bring:
Bring along everything from the standard packing list (but not a sleeping mat! We sleep on bunk beds with mattresses at Onas. Bring sheets and a warm blanket or a sleeping bag + pillow). Camp Onas also has showers, so bring along shampoo and a towel if you like. Everyone who hasn’t submitted yet their forms in the summer of 2017 needs to bring their new Young Friends forms for this 2017-2018 school year!
Arrival & Departure:
Arrive at 5pm on Sunday evening. Dinner will be served around 6, and we’ll start our opening activities by 8. On Saturday we will close our time together with worship (parents are welcome!), beginning at approximately 11AM, and pick ups will take place between 12 and 12:30PM.
Frequently Asked Questions:
How do I get financial aid to attend a gathering? Full and partial financial aid is available to all Young Friends for all gatherings. To receive financial aid, simply register online with either the “partial financial aid” option (entering the amount you are able to pay) or the “full financial aid” option. This financial flexibility is made possible by two funds: the Sergei Thomas/Haley Yarmark fund, which memorializes two Young Friends who died before their time (1948 and 2007 respectively), and the Tyson scholarship fund.
What’s the sleeping situation? Camp Onas provides bunk beds with foam mattresses in platform tents. Cabins are divided by gender. If a Young Friend is in need of a non-gendered cabin, they should contact Young Friends staff to make that request. At least one Friendly Adult Presence (chaperone) will be present in each tent, and a staff person will stay up past lights out (11:30) to ensure sleep.
Is there transportation help available? An email containing a carpool list will go out to all registrants about 5-10 days before the gathering. Those who need rides are encouraged to contact others near them to find one and vice versa for those with space in their cars.
How can I be in touch with my child or PYM staff at the event? Young Friends are often less responsive at gatherings than usual to texts and other messages from parents. This is partly our rules (they aren’t allowed to use a personal screen during program time), and partly a product of being surrounded by lots of exciting/new people to get to know and enjoy. Don’t worry – if something goes wrong you will definitely hear from us or them! Also, if something has gone wrong on your end, feel free to contact PYM staff on site by email at firstname.lastname@example.org (most effective) or by phone (less effective, but still helpful) at 267-702-4796.
