An Invitation
As part of our business meeting, Junior Interim Meeting approved a proposal to invite all members, attenders, and friends of the Yearly Meeting of all ages to come along and be part of the service portion of the Children's Priority for our meeting in March. The kids have been assisting, as part of the Children's Priority, an organization called SHARE- (Self-Help and Resource Exchange), “a program where people get a break on their grocery bills by exchanging volunteer time for the opportunity to buy affordable food.”
Our first trips to SHARE have been a total success. Steveanna, the Executive Director, helped us understand “food insecurity” (not having enough food for three meals a day.) Then we helped pack over 10,000 individual pieces of fruit. SHARE has the capacity to put whoever shows up to work, and they can always use the help packing, moving, sorting, cleaning, organzing, and labelling.
Consider bringing your family, friends, committees, clerks, members, attenders, and everyone else you know to help out at SHARE this March. Friends under 8th grade should attend this special event with an adult.
Details
- What to Expect: After you sign in with a PYM friend at SHARE's location, we will assign folks to Teams that will be taking on various tasks that will be incredibly beneficial to SHARE. There will be Friendly Adult Presences available to answer questions and meet everyone's needs. The exact work we'll be doing has yet to be decided by SHARE, but it is likely we will be helping to organize supplies, pack food, and help their fascility fulfill its mission.
- Getting There: SHARE has a parking lot in front of their building that we are welcome to use. Click here for a google map to the location. There is a bus that gets fairly close to the building as well, click here for public transit directions. I can try to connect potential carpool partners if I have enough lead time by seeing RSVP's.
- Food: We will have a snack break in the morning, as well as a lunch break in the afternoon. We will have pizza and drinks for those who order it ($5.00 suggested donation).
- Temperature: SHARE is essentially a very, very big warehouse. As such, it can be difficult to heat. Plan on wearing coats, and possibly gloves, depending on the nature of our work on the day, and the temperature outside.
- Childcare: Childcare will be available for the very youngest on location. Please consider bringing a few books, toys, or activities. We will provide some of these, but the offsite location makes having a lot of supplies difficult.
