Donald Trump won the presidential election by three states, a victory engineered by ultra-conservative billionaire Robert Mercer, who bought Breitbart News and inserted Steve Bannon into the campaign. Another Mercer company, Cambridge Analytica, acquired data on millions of Americans and micro-targeted by zip code, those voters most likely to swing for Trump. In the last days of the campaign, they bought Facebook “dark posts,” deploying manipulative ads seen only by the user, before disappearing. This homegrown voter manipulation combined with the recent revelations and indictments related to Russian interference in the election is cause for alarm — and action.
