For Dorothy Reichart: called meeting on racism in January. There were more people than any yearly meeting I ever been to. They were so excited and engaged and we committed to something. It was amazing!

I’ve been to many a lively business session in my life, but the final session of PYM at Muhlenberg this week was exceptional. It opened with the sincerity of the clerks (rising and presiding) recognizing that Friends of Color had been caught unaware that Saturday morning program was going to be aimed toward white privelege and prejudice and then moved on to agenda approval which was NOT approved. The clerks table huddled, and offered space for longer worship-sharing where fears and joys were offered along with wisdom on standing tall, moving toward wholeness and looking for the Light Within rather than at surface appearances. The theme “Open our eyes that we might see” was getting extended to, “into the inner light, not just skin-deep.”

As a meeting for business, it was miraculous. And then the younger Friends came in with their epistles, each of which reflected spiritual questions, hopeful expectations, and practical steps. All of us want a more peace-full community and we have a ways to go before our own corners of the Society of Friends are truly equal and friendly.
