Making Space for Silence

    I’ve been on a “sabbatical” from full-time teaching for the last two years, and my days have (not surprisingly) filled with many other projects and work.  But in the midst of this apparent space I’ve created for myself (mostly working from home) I’ve struggled to put into place a daily spiritual practice that can center and refresh my work.

    What have other Friends found works for them?

    I’ve worked hard to develop a spiritual practice that works for me, but I have to admit I am not as consistent as I would like to be. Part of my practice is to be okay with that. Over the past five years I have identified several activities* which help me stay centered and help me grow toward my goal to be a more compassionate person. I have carefully weeded out activities that do not support my ‘core’ areas of focus. I have learned to say ‘no’ a lot! I tried developing a spiritual practice for years, but it wasn’t until I was super clear in my intention that I was able to commit to it. So I guess being very clear about 1) my goal and 2) the actions that support that goal are probably what has helped me the most. Good luck!

    * the activities which I have been focusing on for a few years now are exercise, art (I use painting as a sort of active meditation), sitting meditation (this time each morning [when I do it!] includes spiritual reading), volunteering, and heaps of solitude. I am an Attender, and can only make it to Meeting about once every 8 weeks.

      Thanks, Peyton. I like the spaciousness of different activities in your practice — it feels like a good opening to consider how making space for silence and Spirit could be different practices at different times. And that part of your practice is to be OK with inconsistency — practicing forgiveness.
