Concord Quarterly Meeting met at Westtown for business and worship on a sunny summer morning. Ellen Simmons, assistant clerk, led the business meeting. Among the business was the endorsement of a minute of religious service submitted by Goshen Meeting for Monica Holland, which supported her leading to build relationships between Quakers and Muslims. Also included were the Hickman’s annual report, and a report from Michael Wajda on the past four years of his traveling ministry, given as he discerns the rightness of asking for renewal of his travel minute.
Following meeting for worship we all headed out to the country to Maryetta Clendenin’s for a picnic and tubing on the Brandywine. Maryetta’s hospitality was outstanding; she not only provided accommodations indoors and outdoors for our every need, she had at the ready all our paper and tableware needs, 2 crocks of hot dogs, ice, cold drinks and coffee to supplement our own pot-luck offerings.
After picnicking on the porch about 40 adults and children picked up tubes and headed down to the water. Comments from tubers as they floated along in the sun and shadow included this one from the obviously relaxed new clerk of Birmingham Meeting, “I wonder if we could make tubing an Olympic event?” We rounded out the day with music by Pete Lane, Paul Spiegel and Ted Stokes, and dancing led by Maryetta under the trees.
