Middletown Monthly Meeting of Friends - Lima, Pa

Home Page

For a long time Middletown Meeting has had a 'home coming,' or 'reunion,' on the first First Day of Sixth Month. The stories passed down in the Meeting were that Friends and family would arrive by carriage, train, or trolley in Media. Friends would meet them and all would settle into worship. Middletown was like other Quaker Meetings in that family connections permeated the fabric of the community and made strong bonds of affection. Seeing old friends and family members was a warm and uplifting experience for many.

It some ways, it has been simple to maintain this tradition as a 'home coming' on the first Sunday in June. It took some preparation on the part of Overseers and a crew of workers (mostly men of the Meeting) who set up wooden tables and chairs under the trees, covered the table tops with paper coverings, and found (or remembered) where the wooden horses were for the three boards (after remembering that the boards were stored above the stage in the Social Room) that would be used for the serving table. And that was always placed on the side porch. We always had hot rolls (the food was more of the women's domain); we always had iced tea or juice, and we always had ice cream to go along with always having lots of cakes. There always was ample food; the Strattons always brought corn pudding, the Barkers always brought baked mackerel; the Saverys always brought mint tea. Eating was fun but visiting with Friends renewed our loving connection and helped remind us how we were Quakers.

This year was no different except for some reason, we had Middletown Day on the second First Day of Sixth Month. Maybe traditions can change. We still enjoyed preparing for the day and we still felt the deep bond of affection with one another. God's love is still important in our lives. - Thomas Swain
