Every two years the Education Standing Committee of PYM sponsors a Quaker Pilgrimage to the Lake District in England, where the Religious Society of Friends was formed in the mid-17th century. Daily travels and worship help us glean inspiration, meaning, and contemporary relevance from the life experiences and religious growth of early Friends.

The Opportunity
About 30 Friends and Quaker educators from a number of Monthly Meetings and Friends schools gather as a multigenerational group to explore Quakerism’s past as it relates to the present. Together for six days, the group develops into a beautiful community of Friends. Quaker Pilgrims said of the last journey…“I have a new awareness of the Quaker faith and Quakers living in the world today.”

Our Next Journey
The next Quaker Pilgrimage to England will take place July 16-22, 2012. Join other Quaker Pilgrims and trip leaders, Irene McHenry (Chestnut Hill Meeting, PA) and Deborra Sines Pancoe (Abington Meeting, PA), with their guide from Britain Yearly Meeting, in exploring the roots of the Religious Society of Friends in England’s “1652 Country.”

We will climb the original Pendle Hill, tour Margaret Fell’s Swarthmoor Hall, visit Lancaster Jail and Castle, and worship in 17th century meeting houses. Participants gain a broader sense of their faith through developing friendships and shared discussions with fellow travelers. British Quakers we meet in the Lake District help make travelers’ exploration of Quaker History vivid and exciting.

The cost for the six-day Pilgrimage is $1275 per person. This fee includes room and board, local bus travel to historic sites, guides, and site entry fees. The fee does not include airfare. Maximum group size: 27 people. Some financial aid is available.

Currently the 2012 Pilgrimage is fully enrolled; to be added to the wait list contact Deborra Sines Pancoe at dspancoe@gmail.com.
