Friends' Meeting for Worship is held in silence. Out of that silence, some may be led by the Spirit to speak. Friends are also reminded that worship takes place through silence as well as through spoken ministry.

Princeton Friends, 1999

There is no standard set for uniform belief among Quakers. Instead, Friends way is based on a direct individual relationship with the Divine. Quakers look for That of God in each person, and seek to lead lives rooted in simplicity, peace, brotherhood, and social justice. To test personal beliefs, a Friend may seek the perspective of the Meeting community, of the Bible and other religious texts, and of Friends experience over many years as recorded in Quaker writings.

John Woolman, who was a member of Mt. Holly Meeting in Burlington Quarter, wrote:

There is a principle which is pure, placed in the human mind, which in different places and ages has had different names; it is however pure and proceeds from God. It is deep and inward, confined to no forms of religion nor excluded from any, where the heart stands in perfect sincerity.

Faith and Practice is a publication which describes many of the beliefs and practices that Friends follow in our Meeting communities and in our personal lives. Copies are found in our individual Meetings, and the full text of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Faith and Practice is on the web at http://www.pym.org/publish/fnp/. Copies can be purchased from Quaker booksellers, including those listed in the web sites at the end of this page. Faith and Practice is published in differing editions by Yearly Meetings across the globe. Each edition reflects local and regional thought and practice among Friends.
