Children’s Sessions

“Our message to ourselves and Friends everywhere is: We all have a chance to help when something unfair is happening to someone else. Keep trying to know the ways that Quakers and others are fair and unfair. Then, try to increase the fair and decrease the unfair for Quakers and everyone. We danced and ate ice-cream and played dress-up, too.”
From the Children’s Epistle, Annual Sessions 2015
Annual sessions is the gathering of Friends from all over Philadelphia Yearly Meeting to play together and do the work of our community. Children will have our own fantastic gathering within this larger group, which includes lots of play-time, first day school, a field trip and more!

Program

In the mornings, children will attend First Day School for an age-appropriate curriculum in the spirit of Annual Sessions’ broader 2017 theme. After lunch, there will be a variety of indoor and outdoor club activities to choose from. In the evenings, while the adults are in Meeting for Business, children will come together again for some less structured evening fun. We’ll also have a number of special activities throughout the week, including a field trip to Snipes Farm and a performance from Spiral Q Puppet Theater.

Children will spend most of each day in their age-specific program, and will join the larger community for meals and some of the Annual Sessions programs.

Family Neighborhood

The Family Neighborhood this year will be a collection of air-conditioned townhouses on the College of New Jersey’s campus, a five-minute walk from the main plenary space. Each townhouse will be shared by families whose children are in a similar age group, or who request to be housed together. The townhouses also have kitchens, and families will be able to opt out of breakfast in the dining hall. Linens can be provided upon request at registration for an additional fee.

What to Bring

The following list will give you an idea of what you’ll need to bring for our time together at Annual Sessions. The definitive list will come to you in the Final Details email a few weeks before Annual Sessions begins.

  • Clothing: Bring clothes to keep you comfortable in the heat and the AC! Also bring clothes and shoes that are appropriate for things like outdoor play and hiking. Sturdy sneakers or hiking boots are necessary for the outing, as well as a day pack / bag.
  • Toiletries: Bring all your regular stuff as well as shower necessities (like a towel!) and sunscreen.
  • Other: Flashlight & batteries, games, craft materials and musical instruments are all appropriate to bring along!

Getting There

Annual Sessions takes place at The College of New Jersey in Ewing, NJ..  We encourage carpooling and will send out a list of registrants and departure points with the Final Details email in early July.
